Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight — Early Signs and Treatment

Glaucoma has earned its reputation as "the silent thief of sight" because it causes absolutely no symptoms in its early stages. By the time patients notice anything is wrong, significant permanent vision loss has already occurred. Early detection and consistent treatment can protect your vision for life.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of conditions in which the optic nerve — the cable carrying visual signals from your eye to your brain — becomes progressively damaged. In the most common form, fluid pressure inside the eye gradually rises and compresses the optic nerve fibres. These fibres, once damaged, do not regenerate.

Glaucoma typically destroys peripheral (side) vision first. Your brain automatically compensates by filling in the missing areas — meaning you do not notice it. By the time central vision is affected, 40% or more of the optic nerve may already be gone.

Types of Glaucoma

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (Most Common)

Develops silently over years as drainage channels in the eye become gradually less efficient. No pain, no redness, no early warning. The textbook silent thief.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Can present as an acute emergency — sudden severe eye pain, headache, nausea, blurred vision, and rainbow halos around lights. Requires immediate treatment. Indian eyes, which tend to have shallower anterior chambers, are at higher risk.

Normal-Tension Glaucoma

The optic nerve is damaged even though eye pressure appears within the normal range. More common in patients of Indian and East Asian origin and requires vigilant specialist monitoring.

Secondary Glaucoma

Caused by another condition — diabetes, trauma, prolonged steroid eye drops, or inflammation (uveitis).

Who Is at Risk?

Glaucoma Screening at Atmos

Because glaucoma has no early symptoms, the only way to catch it is through a comprehensive examination. Every adult over 40 should be screened at least every two years — annually if any risk factors are present.

At Atmos Eye & Retina Centre, a full glaucoma screen includes:

Early glaucoma can be identified even when eye pressure appears normal. All four tests together give the complete picture.

Treatment: Protecting Vision for Life

There is no cure for glaucoma and damaged nerve tissue cannot be restored — but with proper treatment, the vast majority of patients retain useful vision for life. The goal is lowering eye pressure to a safe level where damage stops progressing.

Patients who stay consistent with their glaucoma treatment rarely go blind. The commitment is lifelong — but it works.
